10-Minute Family Meditation

Imagine if growing up, instead of getting punished with a time out, you were told to meditate.

At Growing Forward, we share meditation videos every Wednesday, because it is such a healthy way to practice self-care, mindfulness and being present. This week we're going to suggest that you don't just practice meditation by yourself, instead it should be a family affair.

There are a lot of free meditation videos for kids online, one of which we recommend below. We suggest that you listen to the entire meditation before letting your child watch it, in order to make sure it's 100 percent age appropriate.

Here are some tips on how to approach meditation with your child for the first time.

1. Dedicate a Space: Gather pillows, blankets and other comfortable items in a special, quiet place in your home. This space can be indoor our outdoor, given that it is quiet and comfortable.

2. Make it a Game: Before you start with a guided meditation, you can first play "the quiet game" or other games that will help get your child into a relaxed, quiet state of mind.

3. Be the Example: By meditating with your child, they are able to see first-hand how it should be done.

4. Consistency is Key: Make meditation a regular part of your child schedule. Whether you choose to meditate in the morning, afternoon or before bed is up to you, but just be sure that it's something you practice on a daily basis. You can start small with a five-minute meditation, and as time goes on, you can increase the amount of time you spend meditating each day.
